'bottler'.
Bottle and Bottler
'Brown the Bottler'とプラカードには書かれていた。ゴードン・ブラ
ウンは、最近、2007年にイギリスの首相を引き継ぎ、自らの指導力を確認
するために総選挙を行おうと考えていた。その時、突然、彼は、勝てるの
かという強い疑念が降って湧いたようだ。それで、結局、選挙をしない決
心をした。彼の敵たちは、彼を、別の隠喩 chickening out(怖気づいてい
る)、怖がっていると言って非難した。それが、イギリスのスラングで、
'bottler'の意味するところ、何かをやり遂げる勇気のない人である。
しかし、なぜ？ それは、すべて、'bottle'が、'bravery'(勇気)あるい
は 'nerve'(度胸)を意味するかなり奇妙な用法に遡る。今では、１世紀近
く存続している用法である。つまり、誰かが、ビンをなくすと、平常心を
失う、心が乱れる。'to bottle'という動詞が、やがて続いて使われるよ
うになる。もしそれをするガッツがないなら、何かを 'bottle out of'
(やる気を失って何かをやるのをやめる)することになったり、単に
'bottle it'(勇気を失う、力を落とす)したりする。そうして、'bottler'
という語ができた。
しかし、もともとの問題は、なぜ今も残って使われているのかである。
'no good'(役に立たない)の意味の 'no bottle'という古いスラングの表
現がある。それと何か関係があるかも知れない。そして、しばしば、ロン
ドン(起源)の押韻俗語 'bottle and glass'と関係があると主張される。
それは、'arse'(間抜け)の意味であり、様々な完全には納得いかない試み
が、勇気の考えでそれと結びつけられてきた。
一言注意：オーストラリアでは、'bottler'は、 'someone or
something excellent'(非常に優れた人やもの)の意味になる。("That try
he scored was a real bottler"(彼が決めたあのトライは本当に素晴らし
いものだった。)のように。）ややこしいものですね、スラングは。

About John Ayto
John Ayto is a lexicographer and a writer on words and language.
He began his dictionary career as one of the editors of the first
edition of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and
over the past twenty years he has produced a range of his own
books on the history and use of words, including the Bloomsbury
Dictionary of Word Origins, the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang
and Twentieth-Century Words, a survey of the new words that came
into the English language during the twentieth century. He edited
the 17th edition of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and
he has broadcast extensively on lexical matters.
