Go Postal
イギリスで、郵便配達人が出会いがちな危険な状況と言えば、忌々しい
郵便受けに指を挟まれたり、恐らく時折、怒った犬に噛まれたりすること
ぐらいだろう。
アメリカでは、状況はまったく異なる。過去30年に、アメリカの郵便局
職員による大量の殺人があったように思える。大暴れしたり、同僚や公務
員や警官を射殺したりする。公式の統計では、どうやら、郵便職員の殺人
率は、アメリカの他の職場よりは低いようなのだが。
にもかかわらず、- 恐らく、それは、単に奇妙な殺人癖の郵便配達人と
いう考えに過ぎないのだろうが - どんな理由であれ、そのイメージが、
次第にアメリカの一般の人々の想像力を捕らえ、1993年までには、私たち
は、'go postal' という表現が使われるのを発見し始める。'to rush
about in a murderous frenzy'(激高して人を殺しかねなくなる)」という
意味である。
それは、1995年の映画「クルーレス(Clueless)」の中で使われて一般に
広まり、さらにその人気を押し上げ、かなり意味は弱められ 'become
extremely angry'(非常にひどく怒る)という意味で、日常のアメリカ英語
の一般的な語彙の中に入り込んだ。（ 'Mom will go totally postal
when she sees what you’ve done to the car'(ママは、あなたが車にし
たことを見たらめちゃくちゃ怒ると思うよ)のように。)
イギリスの話者は、全体に、まだその言い回しを何か少し奇妙で馴染ま
ないと思っているが、ここで取り上げることには反対しないだろう。
About John Ayto
John Ayto is a lexicographer and a writer on words and language.
He began his dictionary career as one of the editors of the first
edition of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and
over the past twenty years he has produced a range of his own
books on the history and use of words, including the Bloomsbury
Dictionary of Word Origins, the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang
and Twentieth-Century Words, a survey of the new words that came
into the English language during the twentieth century. He edited
the 17th edition of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and
he has broadcast extensively on lexical matters.
