John Ayto explains the origin, meaning and use of the word
'edgy'.
Edgy
up-to-dateで(最新で) fashionable(流行した)、そして cool(かっこい
い)必要のある言葉が何かあるとしたら、それは、「最新で」「流行した」
「かっこいい」という意味の言葉である。「新しい」という意味の古い言
葉より時代遅れでくだらないものがあるだろうか？
さて、実際に、流行するものが、時にふっとやって来ることがある。
'Cool'という言葉そのものが、よい例である。1940年代や 1950年代には、
それは、言葉の流行の頂点にあった。その後、長い間、廃れて使われなく
なってしまい、その時が、最後の流行の時代のように思われた。しかし、
今では、もちろん再び流行っている。
しかし、その類義語の多くは、二度と使い物にならないスクラップの山
である。'trendy', 'with it', 'happening', 'where it's at' - それら
は、今どこへ行ってしまったのか？ そこで、最も新しい流行の言葉は何
かと言うと、それは、'edgy'である。
さて、'edgy'の背後にある考えは、edge は、ものの最も先の部分、新
しいことが起こる場所であり、未来が現在になるところという意味から来
ている。私たちは、'at the leading edge'(最先端で)あるいは 'at the
cutting edge'(最先端で)で起こっている革新についての話もする。つま
り、その比喩的イメージは随分と馴染みがある。
若干問題なのは、'edgy'という言葉は、歴史的に長い間、まったく違う
ことの意味に、'on edge'(気が立って、苛立って、そわそわして)のよう
に、anxious(心配して)や nervous(緊張して)の意味で用いられてきたこ
とだ。しかし、私たちは、いくつもの意味を持つ言葉にも対処できる。誰
かが、町で edgiest な新しいレストランを勧めてくれても、何の心配も
なく理解できる。
About John Ayto
John Ayto is a lexicographer and a writer on words and language.
He began his dictionary career as one of the editors of the first
edition of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and
over the past twenty years he has produced a range of his own
books on the history and use of words, including the Bloomsbury
Dictionary of Word Origins, the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang
and Twentieth-Century Words, a survey of the new words that came
into the English language during the twentieth century. He edited
the 17th edition of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and
he has broadcast extensively on lexical matters.
