'fit for purpose'.
Fit for purpose
Are you fit for purpose? それは、近頃ほとんど何にでも誰にでもさ
れるように思える質問だ。そこで、その答えを準備しておいた方がよいだ
ろう。
このかなり堅苦しい言い回しは、消費者保護法の分野で、ある製造物が、
デザインされた通りに動くという意味で使われ始めた。消費者にとって、
何かが not fit for purpose というと、その意味は、それを返して、返
金してもらったり交換してもらったりできるという意味だ。
21世紀初めになって、イギリス英語では、その表現は、時折比喩的に使
われることがあったが、ここで、本当にそれが広く一般の人々に認識され
るようになったのは、新しくイギリスの内務大臣に任命されたジョン・リ
ードが 2006年に発した「彼の政府省庁は、" not fit for purpose (目的
に適合していない)"」という発言だった。- その意味は、仕事がまったく
できないということである。その前例のない批判が、新聞に大きく書き立
てられ、'fir for purpose' の用法が、ほとんど無制限に広範囲に応用さ
れる道が開かれた。
最近ランダムに検索をしてみると、建物、予算、教育課程、街路灯、鉄
道駅、ホームレスのための宿泊所、議会の法令、牛舎、兵士、土壌、そし
て洗面台まで、ありとあらゆるものが、fit for purpose - あるいは、し
ばしば、not fit for purpose として表現されている。それで、多分、あ
なた方もこう自問するべき時だろう。「私の英語は、fit for purpose(目
的に適合している) だろうか？」
About John Ayto
John Ayto is a lexicographer and a writer on words and language.
He began his dictionary career as one of the editors of the first
edition of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and
over the past twenty years he has produced a range of his own
books on the history and use of words, including the Bloomsbury
Dictionary of Word Origins, the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang
and Twentieth-Century Words, a survey of the new words that came
into the English language during the twentieth century. He edited
the 17th edition of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and
he has broadcast extensively on lexical matters.
