John Ayto explains the origin, meaning and use of the word
'chugger'.
Chugger
昔は、イギリスでは、通りで慈善団体に寄付してもたいたいなら、店の
入り口にただ控えめに佇み、恐らく意味ありげな眼差しをして通り過ぎる
人々を見ては、募金箱をカタカタならすだけで、それ以上の厚かましいこ
とは一切しなかっただろう。
その後、20世紀も後半になると状況は一変した。通りを歩いていると、
熱心な若い男女が、手にクリップボードを持って近づいて来て、助けても
らいたい理由を長々と言葉で説明するようになった。そして、最後に、彼
らの慈善団体で進行中の寄付への署名を求める。
これを人々はどう思っただろうか。そう、こうした人々のために私たち
イギリス人が発明した言葉から判断すると、それほど感心しなかった。私
たちは、彼らのことを chugger(雇われて募金活動をする人) と呼び、私
たちをチャグ(chug=一気に飲む・慈善の名のもとに金を強奪する)しよう
としていると非難する。これは、'charity' の ch- と 'mugger' の
'mug' の -ug- とから作られた混成語である。
さて、mugger(路上強盗)というのは、公共の場で人を襲って強盗を働く
人のことを言い、それ故、chugger というのは、結局は、世の中でちょっ
とだけよいことをしようとしているに過ぎない人たちを、本当にかなり敵
視した言葉である。
しかし、2002年にその言葉が現われて以来、言語の中にそれ自身の場所
を確立したように思える。私たちイギリス人は、卑しすぎるのか、それと
も、全般に気難しく無愛想なだけなのか？ いずれにしても、私たちはチ
ャグされたくない。
About John Ayto
John Ayto is a lexicographer and a writer on words and language.
He began his dictionary career as one of the editors of the first
edition of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and
over the past twenty years he has produced a range of his own
books on the history and use of words, including the Bloomsbury
Dictionary of Word Origins, the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang
and Twentieth-Century Words, a survey of the new words that came
into the English language during the twentieth century. He edited
the 17th edition of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and
he has broadcast extensively on lexical matters.
