'minging'.
Minging
それから逃れることはできません。私たち人類は、互いに侮辱しあう言
葉を考え出す時、最も独創的になるように思えます。過去 100年以上にわ
たって私たちが胸が悪くなるような人や物に使ってきた形容詞を選んで挙
げてみると、'scroungy', 'skanky', 'manky', 'icky', 'grotty',
'grungy', 'poxy', 'scuzzy', 'onkus' (これはオーストラリア英語),
'yucky', 'snotty', 'septic', 'gross' などなど…。さらに続けること
ができるでしょう。
この嘲りの武器庫に最近加わったばかりの言葉は、特に、用途が広く、
歴史的にもかなり辛辣なものです。それが、 'minging' です。
That curry he cooked up for us last night was really minging.
（昨晩彼が私たちのために作ってくれたあのカレーは、本当にひどか
った。）
その言葉は、スコットランドに起源があります。スコットランドの英語
では、'ming' は、不快な匂いの意味の古い言葉で、もともと、'minging'
は、'smelly'(悪臭を放つ、嫌な匂いの) の意味で、- 今でも使うことが
できます。
しかし、もちろん、誰かを smelly と言うのは、紛れもなくその人を侮
辱することです。そして、2000年頃に、イギリスのティーンエイジャーが、
その言葉をより広い意味、'disgusting'(胸が悪くなるような)の意味で使
い始めました。それは、また、'ugly'(醜い)や 'unattractive'(魅力がな
い)の意味でも使うことができ、さらに面白いことに、'stinking'(くさい、
ひどく、へべれけに)のように、誰かが酔っ払っているのを言うのにも使
うことができます。
He'd only had two pints and he was minging.
（彼は２パイント(およそ 1000cc)飲んだだけで、酔っ払っていた。）
'minging' と並んで、'minger'(魅力的でない人、不愉快な人) という
言葉もあります。さて、誰かを minger と言うと、それは、本当に相手を
ひどく侮辱したことになります。それには、しばしば 'ugly person'(醜
い人)の含みがあるからです。もし万一誰かのガールフレンドを minger
などと言ったりしたら、鼻に一発パンチを食らう重大な危険にさらされる
ことになるでしょう。
About John Ayto
John Ayto is a lexicographer and a writer on words and language.
He began his dictionary career as one of the editors of the first
edition of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and
over the past twenty years he has produced a range of his own
books on the history and use of words, including the Bloomsbury
Dictionary of Word Origins, the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang
and Twentieth-Century Words, a survey of the new words that came
into the English language during the twentieth century. He edited
the 17th edition of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and
he has broadcast extensively on lexical matters.
