John Ayto explains the origin, meaning and use of the new prefix
'issue'.
Issue
何かトラブルが生じたり、人を動揺させたり狼狽させたりするようなこ
とがあって、事態が悪くなっていくようなことについて話さなければなら
ないとき、私たちは、言葉を慎重に選ばなければならないと感じるだろう。
私たちは、火に油を注ぐようなことはしたくない。
'problem'は、そうした状況で用いる極めて無難な単語であると思うだ
ろう。しかし、最近は、少し否定的過ぎる、ものの悪い面を過度に強調し
すぎると人々は思い始めているようだ。人々は、'problem'とは異なる言
い方を模索している。
今、取り組まなければならないことがあると、しばしば 'issues'と言
う。そうしたことには、困難なことがしばしばある。それで、人々は、
'problem'の意味で 'issue'を使い始めた。
しかし、それには注意する必要がある。単なる１対１の置き換えができ
るわけではない。全般に、'solving an issue'とは言わないだろうし、確
かに 'no issue'と言うことはできない。
しかし、'That's not an issue'(それは問題でない)や 'Do you have
issues with that?'(それに問題がありますか？)や 'the issues
surrounding nuclear waste management'(核廃棄物管理を巡る問題)のよ
うな文脈では見い出す。
もちろん、何か大惨事が起こったときには、'problem'は、冷静な言葉
として復活する。1970年、宇宙船アポロ13号が、月への途上で故障した時、
クルーたちは、冷静にこう無線で連絡してきた。'Houston, we have a
problem'(ヒューストン、我々に問題が生じた。)と。
About John Ayto
John Ayto is a lexicographer and a writer on words and language.
He began his dictionary career as one of the editors of the first
edition of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and
over the past twenty years he has produced a range of his own
books on the history and use of words, including the Bloomsbury
Dictionary of Word Origins, the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang
and Twentieth-Century Words, a survey of the new words that came
into the English language during the twentieth century. He edited
the 17th edition of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and
he has broadcast extensively on lexical matters.
