John Ayto explains the origin, meaning and use of the new prefix
'hella'.
科学者たちは、絶えず、より大きな量を数え、より小さな量を測ろうと
している。そして、それまでの限界を超えて数え、末尾に０をさらに付け
加えると、その新しい数字の名称が必要になる。
こうした名称を付ける標準的なアプローチは、現在ある単位の言葉に接
頭語を付けることである。つまり、１キロメートルは、1000メートルであ
り、ナノ秒は、10億分の１秒である。公式の接頭辞のリストに最後に付け
加えられたのは、1991年のことである。それは、０が 21付く数字の意味
であるゼッタ(zetta-)(日本語では十垓)、と０が 24付くヨッタ(yotta-)
(日本語では一[禾予])である。
これらの数は、誰にとっても大き過ぎると思っただろうが、今では、０
が 27個付く数字の接頭辞が欲しいと言う科学者もいる。- サウザンド・
トゥリリオン・トゥリリオン(千[禾予])である - また、カリフォルニア
大学のある学生は、Facebook で hella- をその単位のために公式に認め
て欲しいと請願を始めた。
その学生の請願が認められるチャンスはあるだろうか？ それほど大き
くない。こうしたことを決める人々は、古典ラテン語や古典ギリシア語に
起源のある接頭辞を好むから。Hella- はそれほど古典的ではない。
それは、アメリカの学生の 'extremely'(極端な)の意味のスラングであ
る。'It's hella cold today'.(今日はめっちゃ寒い)のように使う。それ
は、恐らく、何かの異常な途方もない例に用いられる 'hell of a'という
語句から来ているのだろう。
しかし、確かに表現豊かであり、もしヘラメートルやヘラグラムという
名称が、あなたの心に訴えるのであれば、その請願を受け入れて署名しな
さい。

John Ayto is a lexicographer and a writer on words and language.
He began his dictionary career as one of the editors of the first
edition of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and
over the past twenty years he has produced a range of his own
books on the history and use of words, including the Bloomsbury
Dictionary of Word Origins, the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang
and Twentieth-Century Words, a survey of the new words that came
into the English language during the twentieth century. He edited
the 17th edition of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and
he has broadcast extensively on lexical matters.
