　'Notwithstanding'という単語は、文中のどこでどのように使うことが

　こんにちは、ナレシュ。あなたから便りがあって、'notwithstanding'
という単語についての質問を受けて嬉しいです。その単語は、非常にフォ
ーマルなので、少し普通ではありませんが、非常に有用な単語です。

　Notwithstanding は、despite や in spite of の同義語で、対比・対
照の状況を示すのに使われます。

　despite や in spite of の使い方を知っていますか？それらは、２つ
の部分や２つの節のある文で、その２つの節の特別な関係を示すのに使わ
れます。主文、すなわち陳述が、'despite'節の情報のために、驚くべき
あり得ないものであるということを示すのに使われます。次の例を見て下
さい。

　　Despite the bad weather, we had a picnic at the beach.
　（悪天候にもかかわらず、私たちはビーチでピクニックをした。）

　ピクニックをするのは驚くべきことでした。というのも天気が悪かった
からです。もう一つ例を挙げましょう。

　In spite of the fact that he was very unwell, David came first
in the Maths exam.
　（非常に体調が悪かったにもかかわらず、デヴィドは、数学の試験で一
番を取った。）

　この例は、二つとも、notwithstanding を使うことができます。

　Notwithstanding the bad weather, we had a picnic at the beach.

　Notwithstanding the fact that he was very unwell, David came
first in the Maths exam.

　重要なことですが、notwithstanding の後には、名詞節(句)が来ます。
また、全般に、notwithstanding節のある文で始めます。そして、これは、
フォーマルな言葉であると私が言ったことを覚えておいてください。それ
で、次の例が、もっとよい例になるでしょう。

　Notwithstanding the global financial crisis, China's economy
continues to grow at an impressive rate.
　（世界的な金融危機にもかかわらず、中国の経済は、目覚しい成長率で

　Notwithstanding his youth, Picasso's early pictures were
technically accomplished and mature in perspective.
　（その若さにもかかわらず、ピカソの初期の絵画は、全体的に見れば、
技法的に完成し成熟していた。）
