　こんにちは、バラク。intent と intention についての質問ありがとう。
いずれの言葉も、計画や目的として何かを心に抱いているという意味の動
詞 intend から派生した名詞です。


　意味に関しては、この２つの名詞の間に違いはほとんどありません。両
方とも、何かをする計画や目的のことです。しかし、言葉の使い方には、
違いがあります。Intentは、例えば、法律関係の文脈でのようなフォーマ
ルな状況で用いられます。一方、intention は、より広い範囲に及ぶ状況
で使われる、より日常的な言葉です。また、文法的には、intent は、数
えられない名詞ですが、intention は、数えられる名詞です。


　つまり、例えば、裁判事件の新聞記事では、"he was carrying a gun
with intent to commit a bank robbery"（彼は、銀行強盗をするつもり
で銃を持っていた。）のような記事を見ることがあるでしょう。一方、友
人との会話では、"I went to the bank with the intention of opening
a bank account, but I forgot to take my passport, so I couldn't
even do that."（私は、銀行へ銀行口座を作るつもりで行ったが、パスポ
ートを持っていくのを忘れたので、できなかった。）と言う人がいるでし
ょう。


　もう一つ重要な違いがあります。Intent は、形容詞でも使われますが、
intention は、名詞としてだけしか使われません。Be intent on ...ing
というのは、何かをする決心をしているという意味です。例えば、"she
was intent on becoming an actress, so she went to drama school
even though it was against her parents' wishes."（彼女は、女優にな
るつもりでいた。それで、両親の願いに反していたが、演劇学校に通学し
た。）


　では、私の intention（意図）は、あなたの質問に答えることでしたの
で、バラク、それになんとか応えられたのではないかと思います。
