　次の文のうち、どれが正しいのですか？

　1. What day is your birthday?
　2. On what day is your birthday?
　3. What day is the Christmas party?
　4. On what day is the Christmas party?

　こんにちは、ルーシー。疑問文での前置詞、on や in や at の用法に
ついての質問ありがとう。


　簡単に答えると、What day is your birthday? も On what day is
your birthday? も、いずれも可能で、いずれの形（文体）も普通に使わ
れています。しかし、この２つの形の用法には、少し違いがあります。
フォーマリティ（丁重さ）に関する違いです。


　非常にフォーマルな言い方（文法）をしたいと思うなら、On what day
is your birthday? と言います。こう言うのは、It is on Tuesday のよ
うに、前置詞 on を使った答えを期待しているからです。


　しかし、これは、それほど厳密でない文法規則の一つの例です。なぜな
ら、日常の英語、それほどフォーマルでない状況では、ほとんどの人が、
What day is your birthday? と言うからです。前置詞を付けない形は、
極めて一般的で、広く受け入れられている形です。


　また、What day is your birthday on? というのも耳にするでしょう。
これもまた、それほどフォーマルな形ではありませんが、普通に用いられ
ています。


　最後に、あなたの質問は、ある意味出来事の起こる時間と関連していま
すが、その場合、'what' より、むしろ 'when' を使う方が、ずっと一般
的です。例えば、


　On what day is the Christmas party?

　ではなく

　When is the Christmas party?
　（クリスマス・パーティはいつですか？）


　あるいは、


　In what year did Gordon Brown become Prime Minister?

　ではなく

　When did Gordon Brown become Prime Minister?
　（ゴードン・ブラウンは、いつ首相になりましたか？）


　あなたが理解を深めてくれたなら嬉しく思います。また、ラジオや映画
で、英語が話されているのを聞くときには、異なる文体（形）を注意して
聞くようにすることをお薦めします。そうすれば、こうしたフォーマリテ
ィ（丁重さ）の違いの感覚を習得することができるでしょう。
