　こんにちは。私は、'repeat'と 'restate'との違いがあまりはっきりわ
かりません。それを説明してくれませんか？

　親愛なる Junへ。

　Repeat と restate との違いについての質問ありがとう。

　ある意味、repeat と restate とは、両方共誰かが再び何かを言うと意
味では似ています。しかし、もし、誰かが何かを repeat するときは、正
確に同じ言葉を繰り返しますが、一方、誰かが何かを restate するとき
は、同じ考えを述べますが、異なる言葉を使って表明します。そうするの
は、意味をよりわかりやすく、要点を強調するためです。これは、大学の
講義をする人が複雑な理論を説明したり、政治家が新しい政策をわかりや
すく説明したりするのに使う種類の仕方です。

　次の例文では、２番目の文が、最初の文を restate しています。

　The government will reduce income tax next year. We will take
less of the money that you earn.
　（政府は、来年所得税を減税するつもりである。私たちは、これまでほ
ど稼いだお金を税金に取られないだろう。）

　一方、次の文では、２番目の文は、最初の文の repeat（繰り返し）で
す。

　The government will reduce income tax next year. We will reduce
income tax next year.
　（政府は、来年所得税を減税するつもりである。私たちは、来年所得税
を減税する。）

　もちろん、repeat と restate には別の違いもあります。行為を
repeat することはできます。２度３度と何かをすることはできますが、
行為を restate することはできません。

　では、違いが、まだはっきりとわからないなら、この説明をもう一度読
んだり聞いたりするようにしてください。よく言われることですが、
repetition（繰り返し）は、学習の重要な一部分ですから。
