　どうか、approximately, roughly, about, nearlyの用法の違いについ
て説明していただけませんか？

　やあ、サマド。どうしてこんな質問をなさったのかしら。- たまたまレ
ポートを書いていたのかも知れませんね。あなたが挙げた単語すべて副詞
で、量あるいは量のばらつきについて述べています。えー、これらの単語
は、程度の副詞として知られており、あなたが挙げた単語の違いの一つは、
フォーマルさの度合で、それを使う時に影響されます。


　Approximately, about, nearly及び roughlyは、ほとんど普通に長さや
量を修飾するのに使われます。そして、フォーマルなトーンである副詞で
始めようとするなら、approximatelyからになります。次の例を聞いてみ
てください。
　

　Approximately half of the residents in the survey stated that
they agreed with the government’s plan to reduce traffic in the
city centre.
　（世論調査では、住民のおよそ半分が、シティセンターでの交通を減ら
す政府の計画に賛成と述べている）


　Police say that the main suspect charged in the case escaped
from custody approximately twelve days ago.
　（その事件の主犯の容疑者は、およそ１２年前に拘留を逃れたと言って
いる）


　マサド、あなたは、これらの例は、アカデミックな論文や公式のレポー
トの一部である可能性があると理解できると思います。話し言葉で
approximatelyを使うのは不可能ではありませんが、日常の状況では、
roughlyや nearly、aboutを使うことがはるかに多いでしょう。それで、
私の残りの説明では、これら３つの副詞の用法を見ることにします。


　Jane told me that she spends nearly one-third of her salary on
rent.
　（ジェーンは私に、彼女は家賃に給与の３分の１近くを支払っていると
言った）


　I guess there’ll be roughly thirty people going to the party
tonight.
　（およそ３０人が今夜パーティに行くと私は思う）


　Because the traffic was bad, it took about four hours to get to
my aunt’s house.
　（交通が不便なので、私の叔母の家に着くまでおよそ４時間かかった）


　By about five o’clock, the library was deserted.
　（５時頃までには、図書館には人がいなくなった）


　これら４つのどの文でも、意味を変えずに、roughlyと aboutに置き換
えることができます。Aboutは、最初、それを程度の副詞と考えると学習
者には混乱を招くかもしれません。なぜなら、それは、前置詞句としての
用法の方に馴染があるからです。例えば、


　Books and newspapers were spread about all over the room.
　（書物や新聞が部屋中に散らかされていた）


　Nearlyは、roughlyや aboutとは少し違います。なぜなら nearlyは、
‘almost’(ほとんど)や ‘not quite’(あまり…ない)の意味だからです。そ
れで、もしジェーンが、家賃に給与の３分の１近く(nearly)を使うという
のなら、彼女は、３分の１よりわずかに少ないだけの金額を使っていると
いう意味です。もし、私たちが　roughlyあるいは aboutと言えば、彼女
の家賃は、３分の１より少し多いこともあれば少ないこともあるでしょう。
私が駅まで歩くのに１０分近く(nearly)かかるというのなら、それは、ま
るまる１０分はかからないという意味です。これらの副詞すべては、書き
言葉でも使うことができますが、レポートを書いているのなら、普通、実
際の数字やパーセンテージを括弧の中に書いておくでしょう。それで、


　Roughly half (53%) of the children in the study could not
identify the US on a map of the world.
　（調査によれば、子供たちのおよそ半分（53%）は、世界地図上でアメ
リカを識別できない）


　会話では、私たちは、しばしば時間について話をしているときに about
を使います。


　Shall we meet at about seven o’clock?
　（7時ごろに会いましょうか？）


　He says he’ll be here in about five minutes.
　（彼は、およそ５分でここに来るだろうと言っている）


　そして、面白いことに、私たちは、しばしば時間の言葉を使って距離に
ついて話します。


　I live about half an hour out of town.
　（私は、町から半時間ほどのところに住んでいる）


　It’s about three hours on the train to London.
　（列車でロンドンまでおよそ３時間です）

ばならないことはおおよそこれですべてだと思います。
