　質問があります。答えてくださいませんか？ as suchと such asとの違
いは何ですか？ お願いします。

　Alex Gooch answers:


　やあ、アリフ、質問ありがとう。この２つの語句 as suchと such asは、
見かけは似ていますが、実際、その意味は、非常に異なっています。


　As suchには、２つの意味があります。先ず第一は、説明するのがかな
り難しいので、例を見てみましょう。次の例を見てください。


　I'm an English teacher, and because I'm an English teacher I
hate to see grammar mistakes.
　（私は英語の教師で、英語の教師であるので、文法的な間違いをみるの
は大嫌いです）


　同じ意味で、別の言い方をしますと、こうなります。


　I'm an English teacher, and as an English teacher I hate to see
grammar mistakes.
　（私は英語の教師で、英語の教師として文法の間違いを見るのは大嫌い
です）


　しかし、この文では、'an English teacher'という言葉を２度言ってい
ます。それをもっと簡単に言うと、こうなります。


　I'm an English teacher, and as such I hate to see grammar
mistakes.
　（私は英語の教師で、そういう者（教師）として、私は文法の間違いを
見るのは大嫌いです）


　この例では、私たちは、suchという単語を、2度目に出てくる 'an
English teacher'という言葉の代わりに使っています。よく似た例をいく
つか挙げてみましょう。


　She's an athlete, and as such she has to train very hard.
　（彼女は運動選手で、そうしたもの（運動選手）として非常に一生懸命
トレーニングしなければならない）
　The film was a romance, and as such it had the usual happy ending.
　（その映画はロマンスで、そのようなもの（ロマンス映画）として、ご
く普通のハッピーエンドで終わった）


　また、次のような文では、as suchは 'exactly(正確に、正に)のような
意味で使うことができます。


　The shop doesn't sell books as such, but it does sell magazines
and newspapers.
　（その店では、本そのものは売られていないが、雑誌や新聞は売られて
いる）


　雑誌や新聞は、本と似ていますがが、正確には本ではありません。ある
いは、


　He isn't American as such, but he's spent most of his life there.
　（彼は正確にはアメリカ人ではないが、生涯のほとんどをそこで過ごし
た）


　アメリカで生涯のほとんどを過ごすということは、アメリカ人であるこ
とと似ていますが、正確にはアメリカ人であることと同じではありません。


　Such asの方はずっと簡単です。それは、'like'や 'for example'と同
じ意味です。（が、しかし正確には文法的に同じではないので、注意が必
要です！）私たちは、次のような文でそれを使います。


　There are lots of things to see in London, such as the Tower of
London, the London Eye and St. Paul's Cathedral.
　（ロンドンには見るべきものがたくさんあります。例えば、ロンドン塔
やロンドン・アイ、聖ポール大聖堂など）


　あるいは:


　Many countries in Europe, such as France and Germany, use Euros.
　（フランスやドイツのようなヨーロッパの多くの国々では、ユーロを使
っています）


　Alex Gooch has been an English teacher for ten years. He has
taught in Poland and Switzerland, and more recently he's been
teaching in various universities in the UK.
