愛国主義

ここで扱っているメルマガではないのですが、[落書き帖]というメルマガで、ここ２回ほど「愛国主義」の意味の単語を扱ったので、それについて書いてみましょうか。

愛国主義と言いますと、皆さんはどんな単語を思い浮かべますか？

patriotismとか nationalismですか？

それはそれでいいのですが、今回取り上げたのは、chauvinismと jingoismです。

では、それらの単語には、どんな意味の違いがあるのでしょうか。ちょっと調べてみました。

patriotism
when you love your country and are proud of it

nationalism
1 the desire for and the attempt to achieve political independence for your country or nation
2 a great or too great love of your own country:
The book documents the rise of the political right with its accompanying strands of nationalism and racism.

chauvinism DISAPPROVING
1 the strong and unreasonable belief that your own country or race is the best or most important:
The war stimulated an intense national chauvinism.
2 (ALSO male chauvinism) the belief that women are naturally less important, intelligent or able than men

jingoism DISAPPROVING
the extreme belief that your own country is always best, which is often shown in enthusiastic support for a war against another country:
Patriotism can turn into jingoism and intolerance very quickly.

ということのようです。

つまり、patriotismは、国を愛し誇りに思うときの気持ちというべきで、日本の辞書では「愛国心」なっていることが多いですね。
nationalismは、政治的な意味が含まれ、時には過激になることもありそうです。
ただ、このふたつは、中立的で非難めいた意味あいはないようです。

一方、chauvinismと jingoismには、非難めいた感情が含まれますね。
chauvinismは、自分の国が最も大切でよいという盲目的狂信的な愛国主義という感じでしょうか。例文にもありますが、「その戦争は国家の強烈な盲目的狂信的愛国主義を刺激した」というような調子ですね。
jingoismもよく似た愛国主義で使われますが、こちらは他国に対する戦争を熱狂的に支持する場合に使われるようです。（盲目的）主戦論という訳があるぐらいです。その例文ですが、「愛国心がたちまちのうちに非寛容で盲目的な主戦論に変貌することがある」ぐらいの意味でしょう。
