Bridezilla
結婚式はストレスの多い儀式になることもある。それがどのようなもの
かは知っている。その大切な日が近づくにつれて、誰でも緊張が高まって
くる。- 花嫁となる人は、準備のどんな些細なことでも完全でなければ癇
癪を起こす。花嫁の父親は、すべてのことを取り仕切ってみたいと思い、
幸せなカップルに相談もせず自分で決めてしまう。花婿の母親は、彼女の
息子を自分の高い基準に達してもいない女性のために失ってしまうと思っ
て、至るところで邪魔をする。
これまでもずっと機知に富んだ言語であった英語には、もうすでにその
３つの状況を表す言葉がある。押しの強い父親は「ダ(ド)ジッラ
(dadzilla)」、独占欲の強い母親は「マムジッラ(mumzilla)」、そして、
感じの悪い花嫁になる人は「ブライ(ド)ジッラ(bridezilla)」である。
この最後の言葉は、1990年代半ばにアメリカでそうした傾向が起きてで
きた新造語である。花嫁介添人への意地悪からウェディング・プレゼント
の貪欲さまで、花嫁のどんな欠点もそれで表現できる。また、花婿にも適
用される。アメリカのシンガー、ケイティ・ペリーは、最近、自分のフィ
アンセ、イギリスのコメディアン、ラッセル・ブランドを、ブライドジッ
ラと呼んだ。というのも、彼は、間近に迫った結婚式にあまりにも浮かれ
ていたから。
その言葉は、もちろん、「ゴジラ(Godzilla)」、もともとは 1954年の
日本映画のために作られた恐ろしい恐竜のような怪獣に基づいている。
（その名の日本語は、'Gojira'で、文字通りの意味は、「ゴリラ・クジラ
('gorilla whale')」である。比較するのはそれほどよいことではないが、
お前たち、世のすべてのブライドジッラ、ダドジッラ、そしてマムジッラ
- おとなしくしろ！
About John Ayto
John Ayto is a lexicographer and a writer on words and language.
He began his dictionary career as one of the editors of the first
edition of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and
over the past twenty years he has produced a range of his own
books on the history and use of words, including the Bloomsbury
Dictionary of Word Origins, the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang
and Twentieth-Century Words, a survey of the new words that came
into the English language during the twentieth century. He edited
the 17th edition of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and
he has broadcast extensively on lexical matters.
