John Ayto explains the origin, meaning and use of the word
'tweet'
あなたはツイーター(tweeter)ですか？ もしそうなら、あなたは、今や、
世界中で１億人近い人々の一人です。「ツイッター(Twitter)」現象は、
2006年にカリフォルニアで始まりましたが、わずか４年で、すっかり人間
のコミュニケーション・システムとして定着してしまいました。
あなたが、そんなもの一度も聞いたことがないという稀れな人であるな
ら、それは、140文字までのテキストベースのメッセージで、他の人々と
コミュニケートできるインターネットのソーシャル・ネットワークのサイ
トのことです。その創始者ジャック・ドーシーは、それに鳴っている電話
の震える振動を思わせる名前を付けたいと思いました。それで、「ツイッ
ター(Twitter=さえずり)」が思い付いたのです。
その単語の第一の意味は、もちろん、「鳥たちがたてる小さな静かな繰
り返される音」のことです。人々が、個々のツイッター・メッセージを引
用したいなら、別の非常によく似た英語の単語が待ち構えています。「ツ
イート(tweet=さえずり)」です。
これは、2007年に初めて名詞として登場しました、そしてすぐに動詞が
現れます。「ツイーター・メッセージを送る」という意味です。（「彼女
の記事が新聞に出てから数百人の人々が彼女のことをツイートしました。」
(Hundreds of people tweeted her after her article appeared in the
newspaper)のように）あなたが熱心なツイーターなら、あなたは「ツイッ
テラーティ(Twitterati)」の一員です。（博識な知識人を表す集合名詞の
'literati'(知識階級)と、恐らく「すべての魅惑的で華やかな人々」を意
味する 'glitterati'(上流階級の人々)にも基づいて作られた新造語）
ところで、これらすべての言葉の発明の中に、それほど広まっていませ
んが、ツイッター経由で画像が送れるウェブサイトの名前に「ツイトピク
(Twitpic)」というのがあります。それは、少なくともイギリス英語の話
し手には、「愚かな人」というい意味の 'twit'を思い起こさせます。
About John Ayto
John Ayto is a lexicographer and a writer on words and language.
He began his dictionary career as one of the editors of the first
edition of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and
over the past twenty years he has produced a range of his own
books on the history and use of words, including the Bloomsbury
Dictionary of Word Origins, the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang
and Twentieth-Century Words, a survey of the new words that came
into the English language during the twentieth century. He edited
the 17th edition of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and
he has broadcast extensively on lexical matters.
