　'soon' と 'when' の単語の意味の違いは何ですか？例えば、

　How soon is he going to turn up with the money?
　When is he going to turn up with the money?

　こんにちは、アンワール。'soon' と 'when' との違いについての質問
を書き込んでくれてありがとう。ご存知のように、この二つの単語は、両
方とも時間について述べる時に使います。'when' は、何かが起こる時に
ついて尋ねる時に使います。例えば、

　When does the train leave?
　（列車はいつ出ますか？）
　When did the first person land on the moon?
　（月に初めて人が着陸したのはいつでしたか？）

　これらの質問では、基本的に、when は、'at what time'(いつ)の意味
です。'when' は、また、何か、恐らくなんらかの出来事が、他の何かが
起こる時を示しているのを述べるのにも使われます。例えば、

　I'll give you the money when I see you again.
　（今度会ったらお金をあげよう。）
　I was unhappy when I got my exam results.
　（試験の結果をもらったとき不満だった。）

　つまり 'when' は、時間に言及する普通の方法ですが、'soon' は、
今から少しの時間、あるいはある出来事から少しの時間でという特別な
意味を伴います。例えば、

　The train leaves soon. Hurry up!
　（列車はもうすぐ出る。急いで！）
　At first, I didn't know anybody at university, but I soon made
new friends and really enjoyed myself.
　（最初、私は大学に誰も知り合いがいなかったが、すぐに、新しい友
だちができて本当に楽しく過ごした。）

　あなたの質問の２つの例の違いを理解するには、'soon' は、今から少
しの間に何かが起こることを強調すると覚えておく必要があります。

　あなたの例、'When is he going to turn up with the money?' では、
話し手は、単に、いつ彼がお金を持って現れるかを知りたいだけです。

　２つ目の例、'how soon is he going to turn up with the money?'
では、話し手は、早く返して欲しい、今から少しの間に返して欲しいと
強調しています。

　私たちは、時間やスピードが非常に大切である時、仕事やビジネスで
この表現でよく使います。例えば、

　I need the report urgently. How soon can you finish it?
　（そのレポートが緊急に必要だ。いつ終えられるのか？）
　The new MP3 players are very popular. How soon can you deliver
some more?
　（その新しい MP3 プレーヤーは、とても人気だ。いつになったらもっ
と多くを供給できるようになるのか？）

　これらの例でも 'when' を使うことはできますが、スピードが必要であ
ることを、今から少しの間に何かが起こるだろうという事実を強調するも
のではないでしょう。
