　さて、'at the end' から始めることにします。というのは、それには
２つ以上の意味があるからです。それは、'at the end of our street'
のように物理的な場所の end（端、終点）を表すことができます。また、
'at the end of the story' や 'at the end of the movie' のよう
に隠喩的な end（終わり）も意味することができます。この語句は、また、
一定時間の終わりの時点も表すことができます。こうした用法のいくつか
の例を挙げておきましょう。

　The teacher set some homework at the end of the lesson.
　先生はレッスンの終わりに宿題を出した。
　I’m going on holiday at the end of the week.
　私は週末に休暇旅行に出かける予定である。

　それでは、'in the end' についてはどうでしょう？えー、それは、
'finally' の意味の副詞句です。一つ例を挙げましょう。

　I complained about the pizza so, in the end, I didn’t have
to pay for it.
　私は、そのピッツァについて文句を言った。それで、結局、そのお金を
払わずに済んだ。
　We waited for an hour and, in the end, we went without her.
　私たちは１時間待ったのに、結局、彼女と一緒に行かなかった。
