　'in terms of' と 'about' とに違いはあるのでしょうか。人々が 'in
terms of ...' で文を始めるのをよく聞きます。

　やあ、こんにちは。これは面白い質問ですね、Jeoung Kim。'in terms
of' と 'about' とは違います。いくつか例を挙げて説明しようと思いま
す。


　最初に、'in terms of' という表現は、次のように、元々は、物事の正
確な関係を説明したものです。


　We prefer to measure our company's success in terms of satisfied
customers rather then yearly profit.
　（私たちは、年次の利益より顧客の満足度で会社の成功を評価したい。）
　In terms of quality, individual players, we have a great team
but the problem is they don't play football together well at all.
　（資質、個々の選手に関しては、私たちは、素晴らしいチームだが、問
題は、彼らがまったく一緒になってプレーしないことだ。）


　次の例では、'regarding'（〜に関して、〜について）の意味です。


　I can help you in terms of your academic problems but not your
financial ones.
　（学術的な問題に関しては、私は君を手助けすることができるが、金銭
的な問題では、助けることができない。）
　In terms of your proposal, I think you are asking for way too
much money.
　（君の提案だが、あまりにお金がかかる方法を求めているように思う。）


　人が 'in terms of' で文を始めるのを聞くときは、それは、何かの一
つの側面について話そうとしているというのが分かります。友だちに休暇
はどうだったか尋ねると、こう答えるかも知れません。


　'In terms of food it was great but in terms of weather it was
terrible'.
　（食べ物に関して言えば、素晴らしかったが、天気に関しては、ひどか
ったよ。）


　休暇を全体としてではなく、別々の側面について話をしているのだとい
うことを明らかにしています。今挙げた例では、'about' を使うことはで
きません。


　実際、'about' という言葉は、英語では、非常に広く使われます。それ
は、全般にある特定の話題に関するという意味で、その一つの側面だけを
意味するものではありません。それで、こう言うことがきます。


　It’s a website about English.
　（それは、英語についてのウェブサイトだ。）
　It’s a book about grammar.
　（それは、文法についての本だ。）
　What was the lecture about?
　（講演は、何についてでしたか？）


　しかし、これらの例では、'about' を 'in terms of' で置き換えるこ
とはできません。なぜなら、全般的な話をしているのであって、物事の間
の関係やそのある一つの側面を明確に定めようとしていないからです。


　それでは、'in terms of' と 'about' の両方を同じ一つの文に置いて、
その違いが明らかになるかどうか見てみましょう。


　It's a really interesting novel about kids' lives in Hollywood
but in terms of vocabulary, it's really challenging.
　（それは、ハリウッドの子供たちの生活についての本当に面白い小説だ
が、語彙に関しては、それは、実に難しい。）


　最後に、this BBC website is all ‘about’ learning English（この
BBCのウェブサイトは、すべて英語学習「について」です）ということが
できるでしょう。そして、'in terms of' grammar help, it is
extremely useful to learners like yourseld!（文法の助け「に関して」
は、あなた自身のような学習者には、極めて有益です。）
