　in hand と at hand との違いは何ですか？よろしくお願いします。

　こんにちは、アジャイ。

　hand という単語を使った語句というか表現についての質問、ありがと
う。

　先ず初めに、'in my hand'というのは、何かが物理的に私の手の中にあ
る、私は何かを持っているという文字通りそのままの意味であることを説
明しておいた方がいいでしょう。しかし、あなたの質問にある２つの語句、
すなわち 'at hand' と 'in hand' は、文字通りの意味というよりむしろ
比喩的な意味で使われます。

　もし、何かを at hand に持っているというのは、近くに使い勝手がよ
いように何かがあるということです。この何かは、本でもいいですし、道
具でも情報でも構いません。例えば、

　Make sure the safety equipment is at hand when you start working,
in case there are any problems.
　（仕事を始めるときには、何か問題が起こったときに備えて、安全器具
が手元にあるか確認しておきなさい。）
　I don’t have Sarah’s number at hand, so I’ll tell you it later.
　（サラの電話番号は（今）手元にないので、後で教えるよ。）

　実は、to hand という語句を、次の例でのように、同じ意味で使うこと
ができます。

　Can you tell me how many items we sold last month?
　I’m afraid I haven’t got that information to hand. Can I tell
you later?
　- 先月何品目売れたか教えてくれないか？
　- 申し訳ありませんが、その情報は手元にはありません。後でもいいで
すか？

　２つ目の表現 in hand には、いくつかの意味と用法があります。先ず、
何かを in hand に持っているというのは、何かを余分に持っている、ある
いは、必要以上に持っているという意味になります。これを使って時間の
ことを話すことができます。例えば、

　I’m not worried about finishing this essay before the deadline
as I still have three days in hand.
　（まだあと３日あるので、期限までにこのエッセイを書き終えることに
不安はない。）

　フットボール（サッカー）の話をしていると、次のような話をよく耳に
するでしょう。「Chelsea are two points behind the league leaders,
Manchester United, but Chelsea do have a game in hand.（チェルシー
は、リーグトップのマンチェスター・ユーナイティドに２ポイント差付け
られているが、チェルシーはあと１試合残っている。）」これは、現在の
ところ、チェルシーは、マンチェスター・ユーナイティドより試合数が１
試合少ないということです。

　第２に、当面取り組んでいる仕事、状況、話題や問題のことを、the
problem in hand と言うことができます。つまり、現在の topic in hand
（取り扱っている話題）は、'in hand' という語句の意味です。

　第３に、面倒な状況を主導・管理（コントロール）していると言いたい
なら、the situation in hand と言うことができます。例えば、

　Don’t worry about the preparations for the party, I’ve got
everything in hand. You don’t need to do anything and it’ll all
be ready in time.
　（パーティの準備のことは心配しないで。すべて私がうまくやってある
から。あなたは、何もしなくていいわ。すべて時間までに用意できるでし
ょう。）

　それでは、the matter in hand（取り組んだ問題）をうまく処理できた
と思います。また、英語を学んでいるときには、いつも BBC Learning
English website を at hand（すぐにアクセスできるよう）にしておくこ
とをお勧めします。そのアーカイブに、どんな有益なものが発見されるか
決して分からないからです。
