　どんな時に it's ではなく its を使うのですか？

　こんにちは、カット(kat)。its と it's についての質問ありがとう。
その２つは、同じ発音かも知れませんが、確かに違う意味と用法です。

　先ず最初に、its、I-T-S を取り上げましょう。この単語は、my, your,
his, her, our, their のような所有代名詞です。次の例を見てください。

　I lost my mobile phone yesterday.
　（私は、昨日携帯電話をなくした。）
　You haven't finished your homework yet.
　（あなたは、まだ、宿題を終えていない。）
　He visited his parents last weekend.
　（彼は、先週の週末両親を訪ねた。）
　The dog ate its food very quickly.
　（その犬は、エサを非常に速く食べた。）
　Look at that car. Its windows are broken.
　（その自動車を見て。窓が壊れている。）

　つまり、私たちは、動物や物体に属しているものについて話をするとき
に、its を使います。

　I-T-アポストロフィ-S と綴られる it's に関しては、これは、実は、
２語、すなわち it と is が繋がったものです。これは、短縮形として知
られています。例えば、it's hot today. は、it is hot today.の短縮さ
れた形です。他にいくつか短縮された形をあげておきます。それらは、す
べてアポストロフィを使って２つの語を繋げています。

　I'll は、I will の短縮形
　He'd は、he would の短縮形
　They've は、they have の短縮形

　重要なことは、it's は、it と is との短縮形だけではないということ
です。それは、現在完了形で用いられているときには、it と has との短
縮形であることもあります。例えば、

　It has been raining. は、it's been raining. になり、
　It has stopped. は、It's stopped. になります。
