　pitiful という単語は、文章の中でどうやって使ったらいいのですか？

　やあ、サンドロ。えー、それは面白い質問です。さて、pitiful は、形
容詞で、pity という単語からきています。ところで、pity には、人々が
抱くある種の心優しい同情や悲しみ、思いやりの感情が含まれます。…
何かで、飢えや寒さであるいは見捨てられて苦しんでいる人や動物を見れ
ば抱くような感情です。そして、これらの pity の感情は、しばしば、苦
しんでいるその人や動物を助けてあげたいという気にさせます。つまり、
何かが pitiful と表現されるということは、あなたがそれを可哀想だと
思う程苦しんでいて、それには助けが必要だとあなたは認めているという
ことです。いくつか例を見てみましょう。

　The horses were in a pitiful condition. They hadn’t been fed
for weeks, and they had sore and infected patches all over their
skin.
　その馬たちは、あわれむべき状態にあった。数週間も餌が与えられず、
体中は痛み、傷口は感染していた。

　The children had made pitiful attempts to look after their
mother but it was clear that the family could not manage.
　子供たちは、痛ましいまで母親を世話しようとしていたが、その家族に
それができないことは明らかだった。

　sorry や pathetic のような単語を、同義語として pitiful の代わり
に使うことができます。ところで、これらの単語 pitiful や sorry、
pathetic は、また、まったく否定的な意味合いで使うこともできます。
可哀想だけれどスキルや世話、注意が足りなかったからそういう状況にな
ったのだといった軽蔑や嫌悪の気持ちの入り混じった感情を意味するのに
も使われます。例えば、

　After years of mismanagement, his finances were in a pitiful
state.
　何年も経営ミスが続いて、彼の財政状況は悲惨な状態になっていた。

　もう一つ例を挙げると、

　He made a couple of pitiful excuses about why he hadn’t
finished his work, but they were not accepted.
　なぜ彼は仕事を終えられなかったかについて、彼はいくつか情けない
言い訳をしたが、受け入れられなかった。

　ここで、pitiful の２つ目の意味の同義語をいくつか書いておきます。
deplorable, woeful, disgraceful に contemptible です。
