　'Raise'と 'rise' - 使い分けが難しいです。BBC learning Englishで、
この２つの動詞の説明は可能ですか？ お願いします。

　Amos Paran answers:


　そうですね。この２つの動詞 'raise'と 'rise'の基本的な意味は、ほ
とんど同じ、上への動き、物理的にも比喩的にも低い位置から高い位置へ
の移動を表します。


　その違いは、文法的なものです。'Raise'は、目的語を必要とします。
一方、'rise'は目的語を取ることができません。例えば、I personally
think that the government of this country needs to raise taxes,(私
は、個人的には、この国の政府は税金を上げる必要があると考えている)
('taxes'が動詞の目的語です)と言えますし、別の言い方では、I think
that taxes need to rise.(税金は上げる(上げられる)べきだと私は考え
ている)と言うこともできます。私たちは、常に the need to raise
standards(標準を上げる必要)について話していますが('standards'が動
詞の目的語です)、- 別の言い方をすれば、standards need to rise.(標
準は上げられる必要がある)となります。
