私は、number"と "amount"について質問があります。
船のようなものを数えるとき、その総数はどう表現すればよいのですか。
a) The amount of ships
b) The number of ships
どっちが相応しい表現でしょう？

こんにちは、ヤン・ツェン。
あなたは、英語の名詞の分類法の一つに、その名詞が数えられるか数え
られないかというのがあることはご存知でしょう。
数えられる名詞の例としては、ship, bottle, chair, table, pound,
computerなどがあります。
数えられない名詞の例としては、water, furniture, money, equipment
などです。
さて、名詞が数えられるか数えられないかということは、その名詞が見
出される文法構文に大きな違いを生じます。
例えば、数えられる名詞には、複数形 - ships, bottles, chairs,
tablesがありますが、数えられない名詞には、複数形はありません。そし
て、文法的にはそのほとんどが単数形です。例えば、this equipment is
really expensive.(この備品は本当に高価だ)のように。
このことは、数えられる名詞と数えられない名詞との間に新たな違いを
もたらします。- それは、'amount'(量)について話しているか 'number'
(数)について話しているかと言うことです。数えられる名詞には、
'number'を用います。それで、私たちは、'the number of ships', 'the
number of chairs'などと言います。数えられない名詞には、'amount'と
いう単語を使います。それで、'the amount of furniture', 'the
amount of water', the amount of equipment'などと言うのです。
