　'if'と 'whether'に関していくつか問題があります。というのは、それ
らが同じ文脈で使われているのを見るからです。それらを理解する助けと
なる説明をして頂けませんか。お願いします。

　Catherine Walter answers:


　わかりました。フェリックス。これは面白い質問です。私たちは、間接
疑問文では、'if'も 'whether'も両方使います。例えば、'I don't know
if she's coming',(彼女が来るかどうか分からない)と言うこともできま
すし、'I don't know whether she's coming'.と言うこともできます。


　しかし、ある状況では、'whether'だけしか使えません。例えば、'to'
のある不定詞の前では、'whether'だけしか使えません。'I don't know
whether to tell him',(彼に言うべきかどうか分からない)とは言います
が、'I don't know if to tell him'.とは言わないでしょう。


　また、前置詞の後でも、'whether'だけしか使えません。例えば、'We
had a long discussion about whether to go by car or by train'.(車
で行くべきか列車で行くべきかについて長い議論をした)とは言いますが、
この文で 'if'を使うことはできないでしょう。


　また、'whether'で始まる節が主語や補語であるときも 'whether'を好
んで使います。'Whether you agree or not makes no difference to me'.
(あなたが賛成であろうとなかろうと、私には違い(関係)はない)のように。
('whether you agree or not'は、この文の主語です。)


　そして、最後になりますが、'or'とともに whetherを使います。例えば、
'I didn't know whether I should laugh or cry'.(私は笑っていいもの
やら泣いていいものやら分からなかった)のように。ところで、英語の話
し方には正しい方法と間違った方法があると考える人々の中には、'or'と
ともに 'whether'を使うべきではないと考える人たちがいますが、実際に
は、今日では、ほとんどの人々がそれを使っています。


　また、最後ですが、'whether'は、'if'よりフォーマルな言い方になる
傾向があり、'whether'でも 'if'でも使える場合には、よりフォーマルな
言い方をしたいときには、恐らく、'whether'を使った方がよいでしょう。
