　こんにちは。ぼくは Vaibhavです。インドから電話しています。ぼくの
質問はこうです。「'which'は、どんなときに、'that'は、どんなときに
使いますか？ この２つの単語を使うときの条件・制限は何ですか？」


━━[解説]━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━


　Catherine Walter answers:


　わかりました。よい質問ですね。あなたが言っているのは、いわゆる関
係節のことですね。これは、普通よく混乱が起こるところです。


　さて、関係節では、人に対しては、'who'あるいは 'whom'が使われ、物
に対しては、'which'が使われます。それで、'the man who came to
dinner',(夕食に来た人) あるいは、'the bridge which crosses the
Ganges up river from here'.(ここからガンジス川を越えて渡る橋) 、繰
り返しますと 'the man who came to dinner', 'the bridge which
crosses the Ganges'.と言うことができます。


　それに対して、'that'は、それほどフォーマルではありません。いくつ
かの関係節で、人にも物にも使うことができます。つまり、それほどフォ
ーマルでないときには、'the man that came to dinner', 'the bridge
that crosses the Ganges'.ということができます。


　しかし、'that'は、いわゆる関係節で同定(誰であるか特定)するときに
だけ使われます。それは、あなたが話していることを理解するための情報
が必要な節のことです。これらは、ともに関係節を同定しているのですが、
もし、私が、'Mr Swan, who came to dinner',(スワンさん、彼は夕食に
来ました)と言うときには、スワンさんを特定するのに 'who came to
dinner'は必要ありません。すでに、彼は同定されています(彼が誰である
かわかっています)。そんなときには、'that'を使うことはできません。
また、'Waterloo Bridge, which crosses the Thames up river from
here'(ウォータールー橋、その橋はここからテムズ川を越えて架かってい
る)と言うときにも、'that'を使うことはできません。つまり、関係節を
同定しているときもそうでないときも、'which'は使えますが、'that'は、
関係節を同定しているときで、フォーマルでないときだけに使うことがで
きます。わかりますか？


　Vaibhav responds:


　この例を挙げてみていいですか。例えば、会議に参加している大統領の
グループがいるとします。「インドから来ている大統領」と言うのは、
'the president who is from India', 'the president which is from
India', 'the president that is from India'のうち、どれが正しいです
か。


　Catherine Walter replies:


　いいですよ。大統領には 'which'を使うことはできません。なぜなら大
統領は人間だからです。'who'か 'that'なら使えます。もし、何人かの大
統領がいて、'the president that's not coming there'.(そこに来てい
ない大統領)ではなくて、'the president that is coming there',(そこ
に来ている大統領)と言いたいときには。しかし、'the president'と言う
とき、あなたが特定の一人の大統領のことを言っているのが明らかなとき
には、'that'を使うことはできません。'who'を使って、'the president
who is coming to the conference'.(会議に来ている大統領)と言わなけ
ればなりません。
