　こんにちは。アンソニーと言います。マルタ島に住んでいます。で、英
語について質問があります。住居の場所を述べるときにどの前置詞を使う
とよいのでしょうか。'in'でしょうか、それとも 'at'でしょうか。例え
ば、I live 'in' Victoria, Gozo? が正しいのでしょうか、それとも I
live 'at' Victoria, Gozo? でしょうか。それが質問です。宜しくお願い
します。

　Catherine Walter answers:


　質問ありがとう。あなたの質問への答えは、簡単ですが、後で少し説明
を加えておきましょう。正しいのは、I live 'in' Victoria, Gozo.です。


　その理由は、'in'と 'at'の違いにあります。私たちは、一点の場所を表
すときに 'at'を使います。例えば、ヴィクトリアへ繋がる鉄道があり、ヴ
ィクトリアから他の場所にも通じているとします。そのときは、あなたは
友人に 'Get off the train at Victoria'(ヴィクトリア駅で列車を降りな
さい)と言うでしょう。


　また、建物の名前を使うときには、'at'を使う傾向があります。それで、
'we're doing this recording at Bush House in London'(私たちは、この
録音をロンドンのブッシュ・ハウスでしています)というように 'at'を使
います。さらに、場所の名前が分かっているとき、働いたり勉強したりす
る場所に、'at'を使います。それで、'I have a cousin who works at the
Pentagon,'(私には、国防省(ペンタゴン)で働いている従兄弟がいる)とか
'my daughter is studying at the Institute of Education'(私の娘は教
育研究所で研究をしています)とかのように 'at'で表現することができま
す。また、グループ活動にも 'at'を使います。例えば、'I was at a
concert, a party, a football match.'のように。


　'in'に対して持つイメージは、ある地域の中、３次元空間の中の場所と
いうものです。それで、'in the kitchen, in the woods,'あるいは 'in
Malta'のように言います。それで、'I live in Victoria' あるいは 'I
live in Malta'. のように言うのが正しいのです。お役に立てましたか。
