　こんにちは。次のテキストの中にある 'is anything to go by' がどう
いう意味なのか教えてくれませんか？

　'And if the experience of earlier Asian economic miracles like
Japan and South Korea is anything to go by, China should carry on
growing at this hectic pace for another twenty or thirty years.'

　こんにちは、Amir。'is anything to go by' は、 'in our experience'
とか 'in the experience of the person writing' とか 'in the
experience of the person speaking'の意味です。

　'is anything to go by' の別の例を挙げてみましょう。あなたが、駅
のプラットフォームにいて、時計を見てみると、列車が遅れています。あ
なたは、駅員さんのところに行って、こう言います。'When is the next
train to London?' (ロンドン行きの次の列車はいつですか？)すると、駅
員さんは、こう答えるかもしれません。'Well, if previous trains are
anything to go by, it will be half an hour late', その意味は、「前
の列車のことを考えると３０分遅れるでしょう」という意味です。

　もう一つ例を挙げると、私たちが番組に有名なポップスター、例えば、
ブリットニー・スペアーズをゲストとして招くとしますと、私たちはこう
言います。'If we had Britney Spears on the programme, do you think
we would get lots more listeners' letters asking us questions?'
(番組のゲストにブリットニー・スペアーズを招きますが、視聴者からの
質問の手紙がこれまで以上に殺到すると思いますが？)すると、プロデュ
ーサーはこう答えるかもしれません。'Well, if last week's programme
with Phil Collins is anything to go by, yes we would.'(そうですね。
先週の番組のゲスト、フィル・コリンズの時のことから考えると、そうな
るでしょう。)

　このように、何かよく似たことの経験があることを'is anything to go
by'と言います. ifで始まり、'if x is anything to go by then...
something else.'という構文をとります。 'if'と'is anything to go by'、
'then'で構文が作られ、'then'の後に、結論となる文が来ることを覚えて
おいてください。
