　'almost'の用法です。

　親愛なるジャマルへ。

　'almost'の用法についての質問ありがとう。それは、副詞で、'nearly'
（ほとんど、ほぼ）, 'not completely'（完全には…でない）や 'not
quite'（まったく…というわけではない）の意味です。

　それは、副詞ですので、動詞を修飾し、普通、動詞の前に置かれます。
例えば、'I almost finished the exam, but in the end I ran out of
time'（私は、ほとんど試験を終えていたが、結局時間が足りなかった。）
しかし、動詞が 'to be'の場合は、'almost'は、その後に置かれます。例
えば、'It is almost 9 o’clock'（おおよそ９時です。）

　第二に、'almost'は、形容詞とともにも用いられます。例えば、'I am
almost ready to leave.'（私は、もうほとんど出かける用意ができてい
る。）、'He is almost certain to be late.'（彼が遅れるのは、ほぼ確
実だ。）のように。

　また、'almost'を、every, all, nothing や no-one のような単語と使
うこともあります。これは、英語を学習している学生をしばしば混乱させ
ますので、次のような例に注意を払ってください。

　Almost everyone uses the Internet these days.
　（近頃では、ほとんど誰もがインターネットを使っている。）
　I buy a newspaper almost every day.
　（私は、ほぼ毎日新聞を買う。）
　Almost all of the students passed the exam.
　（学生のほとんど皆が試験に合格した。）
　I was disappointed because almost no-one came to my art
exhibition.
　（私の美術展覧会にほとんど誰も来なかったので、私はがっかりした。）
　There’s almost nothing in the fridge so I’d better go shopping.
　（冷蔵庫には、ほとんど何もないので、買い物に行かないといけない。）

　さらに、'almost'を時間の表現でも使います。先にあげた例、'it is
almost 9 o' clock'のように。また、期間や物の量の表現とも使われます。
例えば、'I spent almost three months in New York'（私は、ニューヨー
クでおよそ３ヶ月過ごした。）、'The house I want to buy costs almost
two hundred thousand pounds'（私が買いたい家は、ほぼ２０万ポンドす
る。）

　時間に関しては、'almost'は、'always'や 'never'といった言葉とは一
緒に使うことができますが、'sometimes'や 'often'、'occasionally'の
ような言葉とは使えないということを言っておかなければなりません。

　I almost always go to work by bus.
　（私は、ほとんどいつもバスで仕事に行く。）
　I almost never go to the theatre.
　（私は、劇場に行くことはほとんどまったくない。）

　さて、私は、'almost'の用法についてほとんど説明を終えましたが、も
う一つ指摘しておかなければならない面白い点があります。それは、二つ
のものが非常に似ていることを言いたいときに、'almost'を使うことです。

　My pet dog is almost like a member of the family.
　（私のペットの犬は、ほとんど家族の一員のようなものです。）
　Writing to bbclearningenglish.com is almost like having a
personal teacher.
　（bbclearningenglish.com に手紙を書くというの、ほとんど個人的な
教師を持っているようなものです。）
