　どちらが正しいのですか？ 'I could hear the dog barking' ですか、
それとも 'I could hear the dog's barking' ですか？

　やあ Arun、質問ありがとう。


　I could hear the dog's barking は、文法的に正しい文です。The
dog's barking は、所有格の 's を使っており、the barking of the
dog の意味になります。


　しかし、あなたは、あなたが話をしているときに起こっていた物音を聞
くことができたという考えを伝えるのに、動詞の hear を使っています。
その場合、現在分詞 barking を使って、その犬についてより多くの情報
を伝えるほうがより適切でしょう。好ましい表現は、I could hear the
dog barking. となります。


　では、現在分詞句をもっと詳しく見てみましょう。


　現在分詞句は、特定の時に起こっていることについてより多くの情報を
伝えるのに使われます。


　 Did you speak to the man wearing the grey jacket? (the man
who was wearing a grey jacket)
　（あなたはグレーのジャケットを着ている男の人に話かけましたか？）
　 The lady working behind the counter is very busy. (the lady
who is working behind the counter)
　（カウンターの後ろで仕事をしている婦人はとても忙しい。）
　 I could hear the dog barking. (the dog which was barking)
　（その犬が吠えているのを聞くことができた。）


　また、いつも起こることについて話をするのにも現在分詞句を使うこと
ができます。

　 At the end of the road there is a path leading to the
station. (a path which leads to the station)
　（その道路の先には、駅につながる小路がある。）
　 The agent has a website giving details of all the properties
for sale. (a website which gives details of all the properties
for sale)
　（その不動産会社にはウェブサイトがあって、販売中の不動産すべての
詳細が書かれている。）


　動詞 see, hear, watch, and listen to と一緒に用いられると、現在
分詞が使われるかどうかで意味が変わります。次の文を比較してみてくだ
さい。


　 Stella saw the children cross the road.
　（ステラは子供たちが道路を横切るのを見た。）
　 Stella saw the children crossing the road.
　（ステラは子供たちが道路を横切っているのを見た。）


　最初の例、- Stella saw the children cross the road - では、
cross が現在形で使われています。それは、ステラはその行為すべてを見
た、- ステラは子供たちが道路を横切るのを初めから終わりまで見たとい
う意味になります。しかし、２つめの例 - Stella saw the children
crossing the road - では、現在分詞が用いられ、ステラは子供たちが道
路を横断しているところを見たという意味です。- 彼女は横断するのを初
めから終わりまで見たわけではないのです。つまり、 Arun、あなたの質
問の例文 I could hear the dog barking は、あなたが犬の吠え声を聞い
たときもうすでに犬は吠えていた - そして、恐らくあなたが立ち去った
あとも吠えつづけているだろうという意味が示されているのです。
